Course Information

Description

The general purpose of postgraduate studies in theology is to provide an enriching and enhancing education for students at an advanced academic level.  MA (Theology) is a coursework degree that can be completed as either a "general' course or as a 'specialised' course, focussing on a particular area of study: Biblical Studies, Church History, Chaplaincy, Faith Leadership, Liturgy, Ministry, Missiology, Moral Theology, Pastoral Care, Philosophy, Religious Education, Social Justice, Spiritual Direction, Spirituality or Systematic Theology.

Course Outcome

An MA graduate will have laid good foundations in key theological disciplines, had the opportunity to learn at postgraduate level in elective units, develop analytical thinking and engage with ideas, and have undertaken research at postgraduate level.

Candidates who complete a 12,000 word Research Essay at Distinction standard or higher may enter one of the Masters by Research courses.

Course Structure

The MCD Master of Arts (Theology) may be undertaken as either a general or specialist degree:

General:

90 points of postgraduate coursework, usually undertaken as six 15-point units. (A 30-point research essay of 12,000 words may be included).

The MA(Theol) does not of itself articulate to the MCD PhD.

Specialist:

90 points of postgraduate coursework, usually undertaken as six 15-point units, of which at least 60 points must be related to the area of specialization, as approved by the Coursework Coordinator. (Students may include a 30-point research essay of 12,000 words.)

Entry Requirement

The MA(Theol) is open to candidates with a degree from an Australian university who have also completed a foundational theological qualification at graduate or postgraduate level, normally the MCD Graduate Diploma of Theology. Students holding an honours degree in theology may also apply to enter the Master of Arts (Theology) degree.
