Foundational Unit (Biblical studies) for MDiv


This unit offers an introduction to interpretive methods for reading Synoptic Gospels, with a particular focus on the Gospel of Mark. Particular emphasis will be placed on the way in which an understanding of Christian community, mission and discipleship is presented in this narrative.
Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this unit, it is expected that students will be able to:
1. identify and evaluate various approaches to interpreting the Gospel of Mark;
2. demonstrate a familiarity with the theological character of the Gospel of Mark;
3. demonstrate a capacity to use interpretive methods relevant to reading gospel narratives;
4. display an appreciation for interpretive issues peculiar to New Testament studies;
5. demonstrate a capacity to make transitions from text to life particularly in terms of theological and hermeneutical application;
6
. demonstrate a capacity to undertake independent research at graduate level (Graduate).
