This unit offers current and prospective practitioners the opportunity to explore the practice and theology of school-based chaplaincy. Topics will be selected from: A theology and ecclesiology of chaplaincy The chaplain’s role and models of chaplaincy Theological reflection, professional development and peer supervision Professional ethics, confidentiality, referral and crisis responses Youth in Australian society: major issues including the current educational context Child and adolescent development and spirituality Approaches to religious education and classroom methodology Being a Christian professional in a pluralist context The role of pastoral care and counselling in the school context.

Prerequisites:

Level 2: 30 points in Fields B, C or D

Level 3: 45 points in Missiology, Pastoral Care Christian Education or Youth Ministry

Class Time: over two weeks in July and September

Monday to Wednesday 9, 10, 11 July (10.00am to 5.00pm)
Monday to Wednesday 24, 25, 26 September (10.00am to 5.00pm)

Assessment:

Level 2:

One 2000 word essay (50%)
One 1500 word research report (30%)
One 1000 word case study (20%)

Level 3:

One 2500 word essay (50%)
One 2000 word research report (30%)
One 1000 word case study (20%)
